About

We love to read books. We also love movies. We navigate nerd culture like its second nature exploring strange new worlds and giving you our thoughts on them.

Welcome to Paper Spaceships. We hope you enjoy your stay.

Rufus de Rham

Rufus grew up in a small town in a family that loved books and movies. He was addicted early on reading Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park in third-grade and sneaking Stephen King books off of his mom’s shelf. Now he works at a bookstore and spends his free time writing with Shaka, writing for Paper Spaceships and Lucid Screening, and making movies. Rufus doesn’t sleep much. He knows everything there is to know about Asian cinema, has lived in Korea, loves comics and video games and is a total nerd. He also lives on the internets.

Shaka Shervington

Shaka was just like any normal nine year old boy until he discovered his older brother’s cache of fantasy and sci-fi literature. His life was never quite the same after. Currently, Shaka works a dull 9-5 job that gives him enough time to keep up with the latest novels. When not reading, he is practicing his own writing, and hopes to someday have one of his works published. Shaka lists Robert Jordan, George R. R. Martin, Terry Brooks and Anne McCaffrey among his biggest influences.

Whitney Ross

Whitney is an editorial assistant, sci-fi & fantasy nerd, book collector, and Starbucks junkie.  At age 8, her favorite book was Pride and Prejudice.  While she still loves Pride and Prejudice—and Mr. Darcy—she reads mostly science fiction, fantasy, and YA.  She has a Friends reference for any situation, but her favorite show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

James McCormick

Forged from steel, spare cogs and nerd, James comes from the distant future to share his geek wisdom with all of you out there in the interwebz. If it’s been made, he’s watched it, read it, ate it and processed it in a million ways to present to you the most thought provoking wordgasms you’ve ever seen. Join him and the rest of Paper Spaceships in changing your life forever. You won’t regret it. I guarantee it.

Scott Fortner

Scott remembers growing up in the rural South.  Scott remembers the humidity and the Tennessee River and the smell of fried okra…but these are not Scott’s memories.  Scott is a replicant created for the sole purpose of cataloging and critiquing sci-fi films, and these memories are only implants used to give Scott the sensation of real life.  To humankind, Scott is nothing more than a soulless blogging machine with artificially implanted emotions.

Allison Kim

Allison has been a designer since seventh grade, a writer since third grade, and a nerd since birth. Her childhood was filled with days of Magic: the Gathering, Harry Potter, Animorphs, Anne McCaffrey, EverQuest, SNES, The Princess Bride, Sailor Moon, and dragons. These days, when she’s not writing her novel, she’s found playing her Nintendo DS, reading as much as she can afford, missing her guinea pig Quinn, playing World of Warcraft, or watching 30 Rock. She has a degree in graphic design, and she moved to New York from Kansas to pursue a career in publishing. In the interim, she works at a bookstore so she can be around books as much as possible, because they make her so happy!

Hannah McDonald

Born and raised in Central Pennsyltucky, it’s no wonder Hannah grew up nerdy.  With relatively little to do, she spent way too much time at the local public library, reading books and renting classic movies on tape.  (FYI: there is no such thing as too much time spent at a library.)  She has a BA in Communications and also edits fiction for The Furnace Review.  She loves music, indie films, poetry and is a comic book n00b. To this day, Hannah still fights for the honor of Grayskull, even while working a 9-5, blogging, and freelance writing.

Brianne Dempsey

Although Brianne may seem like a newbie to the wondrous world of nerd-dom, she has been influenced by the culture since she was a small one. Her fondness for E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Back to the Future as a kid shaped her young mind in ways she could only imagine. Now, she has a great love for Firefly and Serenity, and will always hold a place in her heart for the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Chuck Palahniuk. Brianne is a native Greenpoint, Brooklynite and has a passion for travel. Her favorite places in the world include Galway, Ireland, and Trastevere in Rome, Italy.

John Ashline

John grew up in a little city in upstate New York–we’re talking close to Canada upstate. John was born just after John Lennon was killed, and his parents named him after the slain musician, including Lennon’s middle and last names. Books have always been present in John’s life, since his mother is an avid reader, and he reads anything.. He recalls his forays into nerddom: when his parents showed him Star Wars for the very first time. Currently unemployed, John finds himself going back to college and enjoying it.

Christine Morrison

Christine first encountered Sci-fi watching Star Trek: The Next Generation with her father every week.  She nurtured this start by reading all the favorite books of her big sister, starting with Piers Anthony’s Xanth Series in elementary school and continuing through high school with David Eddings, Anne McCaffrey, Robin Hobb, and Dave Duncan.  She has read books in Australia, New Zealand, Boston, Arizona, and (most recently) New York where she bakes croissants and other delicious pastries to pay for her unexpectedly expensive habits of afternoon tea, theater, anime, movies and books.  Christine has a BA in Theatre Arts, a BA in Speech Pathology and Audiology and an Associates in Pastry and Baking.  Someday she hopes to pay off all the student loans incurred by this schooling by writing her own novel or winning the lottery.
