All right! Not that you’ll know until tomorrow, but this will be my second post this week. I am feeling on top of the world, today, as I got some great test scores back, and it’s basically put me in a pretty good mood.

Enough about that, though. I am here to talk about my Top 7 Childhood movies. These movies were NOT easy for me to pick, really. I have so many movies that I loved as a child, and I still watch many of them today. Hell, I’ve even probably watched some of them semi-recently.

Since I was born in 1980, I was a child of pretty much the entire decade though I can’t claim that I remember movies I might have watched as a wee one. From about five years-old, I remember certain movies, and these were my favorites. (Granted, this list will span from my 5th to 10th years…more or less…). These movies aren’t really in any order.

Phone home...

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

I love E.T.! Though many people seem to terrified of him, I always had a soft spot for the poor, stranded bugger. I was/still am a sensitive person, so I had/still have a hard time watching him turn all grey and nearly dead. I haven’t watched it in a while, but I have seen the newer releases. What the hell is with the walkie-talkies, Spielberg? How non-threatening. I enjoy the alien species appearance in the Star Wars prequels, and E.T. reacting to the kid in the Yoda costume? Cute!

Do not feed after midnight

Gremlins

Gizmo was the cutest thing, and an awesome pet…if you followed the rules. Seeing the other Mogwai turn into Gremlin egg-sac things was kinda cool. What kid, at the age you see Gremlins, doesn’t like that kind of gross out stuff. We used to watch this every chance we got. I haven’t seen it in some time, and I want to show my 6- and 7 year-old nephews! I bet they’d enjoy it as much as I used to, and I think I would enjoy it all over again.

Who you gonna call?

Ghostbusters

As a kid, I had a penchant for the paranormal. It’s with me today in my love of monsters, etc. Ghostbusters was great. It featured ghosts, and even some gross-out action. I was always a little afraid of the StayPuft Marshmallow Man, though. Though I sure everything tasted so much better after he exploded all over the city! This is another I haven’t seen in a while. This post is making want childhood movie night. Anyone wanna come?

Tik-Tok is the MAN!

Return to Oz

This was an amazing sequel, but that’s speaking as the adult me, of course. This was one of my favorite go-to movies growing up. I loved it so much, and still love it today! Now, I can appreciate the darkness that is inherent in this movie. Growing up, I wigged out about the Wheelers (still creepy as all get out), the Deadly Desert and Mombi with all those damned heads! “DOROTHY GALE!!” Creepy! I just recently rewatched this one (thank you, James!), and fell in love all over again.

...You're my only hope!

Star Wars

All right, all right! I am an unabashed Star Wars fan, I admit it. These movies basically made up my childhood. I have seen each, and every one of these movies more times than any other on this list. Star Wars is, and will remain, my favorite movie ever. I bet, by the time I was 7 or 8, I could recite them for you, line-for-line. My love of these movies (and to an extent, the prequels) cannot be tarnished. They are the core of my geekdom!

COWABUNGA!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

When I was growing up, I had every single Turtles figure that existed. You name it, I had. I was sooooo stoked with this live-action version of my favorite show came out. I saw it (and it’s mediocre–well II was OK–sequels) as soon as they came out in theaters. And it was just so cool that Raphael got away with saying “Damn!” on screen. I even had, and listened to, the soundtrack. I haven’t seen it in a while, and I am not sure how it will stand the test of time. I do own the DVD, though. It’s going on my list of things to rewatch.

Kuato...'nuff said

Total Recall

So, this is totally not a kids movie in any way, shape or form. For some reason, though, after it came out I always found myself watching it. We used to go to my aunt’s house a little ways upstate, and my cousins and I watched the hell out of this movie. I don’t know what it is, but I found it so enjoyable. Like many of the movies on here, I haven’t seen it in a long time. I am not sure if I want to, though. I don’t want to negate the awesome memories I have of it.

So here I am, still alive and producing a Top 7 for Wednesday (ok, it is one day late) no less! I blame Shaka and life for keeping me from you. Shaka, I need to pace the books you recommend, because there was a week or more that I was in a Hunger Games obsessed cacoon. Then I got the Warded Man from the library, and my sister visited…..anyways, now that I have caught up on a little sleep and before I enter another spiral, with the Gregor:the Overlander books…. A Top 7 List!

Keeping with the theme I started with my first post and one on which I hope John, Shaka, and anyone else might join, I am listing more favorite things from my childhood. ( I swear my lists will leave nostalgia land soon.) So here are some of the movies I watched over and over again as a child, and many of which I quote ad naseum to this day.

7. Puss N Boots

I watched a lot of the disney channel as a kid and they had this whole slew of fairy tale musical movies. I remember most vividly the one for Sleeping Beauty and this one; Puss in Boots. The songs still sometimes pop into my head. And I mean, come on: Christopher Walken is the singing, dancing cat, himself! I admit to buying this movie at Sam’s Club for 5 dollars, just to watch it again, when I got older. Why does nostalgia have such power over us? It definitely brought back the kid in me, anyway.

6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

So as most of you know I am an incurable romantic. And for some reason, I loved the April O’Neil and Casey Jones’ romance. I also loved the tension between Donatello and Rapheal, that is such a typical form of sibling rivalry and disagreement. I liked the calm ways of their mentor, and the scene with the baby turtles jumping up and down and shouting : “Radical, Radical, Radical!” I even liked many of the very stupid jokes, often centering around pizza. I saw this movie in the theater with my dad and my younger sisters, and I remember singing along the to rap song that plays during the credits as we left.

5. Neverending Story

This was a movie I found deeply scary as a young child. The shutters banging as the kid reads the book in the attic of the school, Atreyu being stalked by the wolf, even the turtle. I was thrilled despite and because of my fear. I remember holding my breath as Atreyu passed through the sphinx like guardians. This was definitely a dark movie for a child, but I thought Atreyu was cute, and I loved the fantastical elements of the story.

4.Labyrinth

Looking back on this movie, it is often hard to see beyond the costuming choices made for Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie). But as a younger child, I never noticed what seems obvious now. I was terrified, when the baby was kidnapped by the goblins, and fascinated as Jennifer Connoly walked through walls. I loved seeing so many childhood images come to life, like the MC Escher maze, or the Where the Wild Things Are character. I loved the knight and his dog and was a little creeped out by the sidekick/guide. This movie was original in plot and apperance and then, as now, I love almost anything to do with the muppets.

3. Flight of Dragons

So I have come to learn that not nearly as many people watched this movie growing up as I thought. Sad, as I believe it is the thing that started my dragon obsession as a young child. Looking back on it, there are some parts of this movie that seem incredible hackneyed and corny as an adult, such as the line between science and fantasy. Maybe it is just the way they are played out. However, I loved the idea of dragons as a kind of housepet/roommate. I liked the wizards and the princess. I liked the idea of the escape possible from this world and the way the new world was explained once Gorbash was inhabited by the main character, Peter, who then has to learn to be a dragon. I liked the knight, Sir Orin and the female robin hood character, and who doesn’t like a fairytale ending, when they are small? I love the animation style, done by the same people who did the Last Unicorn and who I have since learned moved on to Studio Ghibli. Also, James Earl Jones voices the villain. There is no topping that!

2. Last Unicorn

As any young girl, I was a sucker for a unicorn story, but this movie, based on Peter S. Beagle’s book (he also penned the screenplay), is more than just a story for kids. There is a lot of deeper stuff going on. It deals with the dissapoiontments of a life lived that is not what you expected, with respect for your equals, with seeing beyond the surface of things, of having to change yourself and work to achieve your dreams and your own happiness, and even that age old cliche “Having loved and lost is better than never to have loved at all.” This movie easily has plenty to amuse a child, and it is animated, with plently of songs, but it can easily speak to an older audience and even reading the book does not diminish the movie. True, they are slightly different, but having the author penn them both has allowed the movie to stay true to the original in atmoshphere and themes. Me and my younger sisters literally killed this casette tape through repeated viewings. Luckily, the dvd is much heartier.

Princess Bride

Ahh, classic. I think Cary Elwes (Wesley) may have been might first crush. The fantastic characters (Inigo Montoya, Fezzik, Dread Pirate Roberts), the monsters (ROUS, the shrieking eels, the prince), the great one liners, the beautiful scenery and the beautiful love story all make this a movie I can watch over and over again. I remeber my older sisters quoting the ridiculous accent of the priest at the marriage all the time. This movie is timeless. I think only the part where the grandfather and the son show up in the narration, do you truly get a sense of when it was made. But it is a movie I recommend to everyone, if I am able to find anyone who hasn’t already seen it and loved it.

So, I have been trying to think of something completely random for a top 7, one that I would not get too worked up about, and as I was walking past a trendy clothing shop, I happened to notice the Little Miss Sunshine shirts they had available for purchase. This brought back many memories of hours of my youth spent watching some of the most inane programming ever put together for children’s entertainment. I loved it then…some of it I even like now, but much of it was truly ridiculous.

Honrable Mention: Fraggle Rock, Rainbow Bright, Care Bears, Muppet Babies and(even though it started in the 70s, as it was a big part of my growing up in the 80s), Scooby Doo

7. My Little Ponys

I am embarrased to admit I watched this series, but the movie where they have to use the flutter ponies to fight of the slime is still scary accurate in my mind. Besides, what young girl doesn’t want a pony growing up?

6. Duck Tales

Maybe this show is a little obscure, but I used to watch a lot of the Disney Channel. Scrooge McDuck, swimming through his vault of gold coins, defying all logic of mass, is one of those images that stays with me. And then of course you have his three trouble some nephews , Huey, Dewy and Louie (the same number of a certain group of mischevious chipmunks…huh), and the crazy flying ace, and the rest of the misfit cast, including an Elvira like female villian who is always trying to steal Scrooge’s money.

5.Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers

So of course you have Chip and Dale, but the character I remember most is Gadget. It was fun to see all the ways she found to make tiny household objects into great inventions, much like a female, rodent sized Macgyver. And of course, there was that little bit of mystery and crime caper in this show. The show saw often motivated by the odd couple nature of Chip being straight laced, and getting things done and Dale being the more zany, uncontrollable character.

4. Inspector Gadget

I loved this show growing up. I liked that the inspector was so completely clueless and that Penny and her dog had to solve all the crimes and catch the bad guys, and still make it look like Inspector Gadget had accomplished it. Sort of a kids version of the Pink Panther, or Get Smart. I remember watching the live action movie with Mathew Broderick and being hugely disappointed with it. Mostly I was upset because the had ignored the maxim that you never get to see The Claw. The best part of the Claw is that you never see more than his hand petting his cat.

3. Smurfs

I dont think any nostalgic 80s cartoon list could be complete without the Smurfs. They are iconic and a fruedian dream. So many thoughts on why Gargamel wanted to eat them (dark for a kids show, right?), why they are blue and live in mushrooms, Hw many times can they smurf in one sentence and how many different meanings can this one word have, and finally, what it means that they start off with no girls, till the villian introduces just one into their community (until unexplicably, without her pairing up, there are three children smurfs, one of which is the second girl)

2 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Aww, reptilian ninjas taught by a rat, saving New York while scarfing pizza. I don’t know, it was iconic. I loved it , and the first live action movie that it spawned. Maybe it was just that it was so random. Of course, there was martial arts and crazy 80s slang in every episode, so I am sure that didn’t hurt.

1 He-Man / She-Ra

Is it just me, or does he get A Lot more sun than she does?

Definitely my favorite, most remembered television series from the 80s. I had She-Ra’s castle, my sister had Castle Greyskull and we all had action figures that we used to play with. My parents stored new action figures in the garage to hide them till they finally gave them to us. The He-Man / She-Ra movie was the only movie my younger sisters and I could agree on at the rental store. I’m Not sure why we never just bought the movie….

Like many of these 80s shows, it was a series based on selling action figures, and in my case it obviously worked. However, it did have actual plotlines, past just beating up new bad guys every week, and, having just re-watched a few episodes recently, I have to say, the writing was terribly in some ways, but poignantly so. There was this one line: “…he grew lonely and evil.” It is almost like watching MS3TK, but not even needing the robots. I know this is not how I felt when I originally watched it; back then I was fascinated, but I think this show still has something. “By the Power of Greyskull!”

I toyed with the idea of writing this on the night that Futurama began airing again. I sort of forgot about it until this week, when Rufus commented on a Facebook post I had made using a quote from the most recent episode. It was then that I decided to write a short piece on the return of Futurama to television. It’s not super in-depth, because I don’t want to spoil any of the episodes. I am probably naive in thinking that some of you might not have seen the debut episodes, but that’s neither here, not there.

Last Thursday a momentous event occurred. No, I am not talking about my first official post on the site…I am talking about the debut of all new episodes of Futurama on Comedy Central. I don’t know about anyone else out there, but when Fox canceled the show back in 2003, I felt wronged.

In between the last episode of the series when it was on Fox, and the newest episodes that have recently started airing, there have been four DVD releases. Each of these DVDs played out like extra long episodes of the series, and worked as trial episodes.

A decision was made to begin new episodes, airing on television. After seven long years Futurama finally made a triumphant return. Comedy Central had one of its biggest nights, viewer wise, because of the show’s return.

Picking up right where the fourth DVD (Into the Wild Green Yonder) left off. The Planet Express ship, containing the entire main cast of the show, arrives at Earth after going through the Panama wormhole. Most of the cast, however, meets its fiery doom as the ship (and Nimbus, Zapp Brannigan’s ship) crash just outside the Planet Express building in New New York.

The debut episode was entitled “Rebirth”, and was quite fitting since each of the crew (minus the Professor) had to go through an actual rebirth via stem cells. The story of the episode had some interesting twists, reminiscent of “The Sting”, but not quite as involved. All-in-all it was a great debut. It was almost as if the show was on hiatus—and extremely long hiatus—rather than canceled.

The second episode (two aired for the debut), “Inna-Gadda-Da-Leela”, was a classic Zapp-focused episode. Zapp and Leela undertake a mission to stop a “death ball” from censoring the Earth, and crash land on a veritable Eden world. It also contained many of the fun elements that most Futurama episodes are known for, like the futuristic take on older cinema newsreels.

The most current episode, “Attack of the Killer App” was (at least to me) an instant classic. A lampoon of many current trends—Twitter and the iPhone and Susan Boyle, namely—it speared these issues as only a series set a thousand years into the future can! It was full of some great jokes, and still managed a hint of sweetness, when dealing with some Fry and Leela issues.

I am thrilled that Futurama is back on the air. Though some of the DVD releases were weak—I am looking at you, Bender’s Big Score!!—the new episodes of the series have been very good, so far. Some are saying that the humor has gotten crude, but I think those crude jokes were always in there. I don’t know. I just hope that the writers keep up the good work. I don’t want to see another cancelation!

If you’re new to this, basically we all throw movies into a hat, draw a title from said hat and write a review about it. Usually we go for some awful movies and just try to make the best of it. This year I drew Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (a la 1958 version)… all I can say is whoever threw this name into the pot has to be godless and cruel.

When I first saw the notice informing me of my lot, I said “Hell, this ain’t so bad… might even be fun!” What the fuck was I thinking?

The story opens up simply enough: douchebag TV anchorman reports that a “fireball” has been spotted in several locations all over the world, listing countries and last known sitings. Using what can only be described as… well, just plain movie bullshit, he predicts that this fireball should be over California any minute. And he’s right. How is that possible when in 2010 I can’t even get an accurate ETA on normal things – like an airline flight – or whether my Domino’s delivery (using their so-called pizza tracker) is actually en route or is it still in the oven? Madness.

Well the world’s most predictable UFO hovers in the Cali desert highway until our slightly inebriated and waaaay crazy heroine Nancy if forced off the road by it and sits in her car, screaming hysterically. Err, drive bitch! After a few minutes of inane shrieks, her brain turns on and she runs back to town for help. Later, it will dawn on me that the town is ridiculously far from where she abandoned her car, and there’s no way she could have moved so fast back to town.

Side note: Our girl Nancy is rich. I’m talking retarded money, son. She has a diamond the size of a pocket watch around her neck.

Nancy brings her crazy ass back, telling the sheriff what she saw and begging for her husband Harry who, busy plotting with his new lover named Honey on how to steal his wife’s money, does not want to be found. Because Nancy’s rich, the sheriff and his moron of a deputy – serving as comedy relief in a movie that is, well, a comedy – have to take her back out into the desert to find the UFO. Long story short, they don’t and Nancy goes home and is drugged to sleep by her hubby, but not before telling him that she thinks the alien was after the diamond she wears around her neck. Yes, our alien came to earth to steal chains. If he was smart, he should have waited till the late 80′s to hit up an Eric B. and Rakim concert.

Another side note: Either Nancy’s got a crazy nice rack, or I’ve had too many Coronas.

Taunted by our douchebag TV anchor, Nancy goes back out to the desert in search of her UFO, this time with Harry in tow. When they finally find the UFO after searching all day, Nancy inexplicably hops out of the car and charges at the craft screaming until what looks like a cross between a pedophile and Christopher Lloyd opens up, again reaching out for her diamond. While she crazily fires shots into the thing, Harry abandons her, running back to town to pack his belongings. The police stop him and hold him for questioning until word comes that Nancy’s turned up… passed out on the poolhouse. Wounded and unconscious, is in need of treatment. Harry, saved by a crappy alibi from his lover Honey hatches a new plan – to kill Nancy using an overdose of her medication. Harry sneaks into the room, only to discover his wife is now more than just a bitch… she’s a huge one.

The Sheriff and the butler… yes the butler, go tracking the giant footprints back to the ship, where they discover that the diamonds our UFO have been stealing are power sources for his ship. And here I thought he was just trying to get his swag up. I will admit though, there is a cool shot where their faces are distorted in the crystal globes. But that’s it. The rest of this movie sucks, emphasized by our alien’s crappy brawl with the men when they try and steal his ice.

The movie pushes towards its conclusion when giant Nancy wakes up (paper-mache made hands and all), screaming for her husband Harry, who again is nowhere to be found. She literally busts out of the house, with a doctor screaming “More morphine!” Hilarious. Nancy goes to Tony’s Club, where she knows her husband is doing some serious womanizing.

Final side note: No, I'm not drunk. Nancy's rack is outta control. It's almost as crazy as she is.

Nancy pulls some classic jilted wife moves here – destroying public property and searching hotel rooms for Harry while he hides like a little bitch. She tears the roof off the club – literally – and kills Harry’s lover Honey with a support beam she holds like a damn Slim-Jim. Then she drags Harry out, trying to carry him off. Just when she was about to break him off a piece (or just break him), leave it to Sheriff cock block to come in shooting, blowing up the transformer in the electrical tower, killing both Nancy and Harry in the process.

Oh, and then everyone just walks away. Because stuff like this just happens all the time out in Cali.

Is there a moral here? Probably, but I can’t seem to find it.

It helps to be autistic.

I got my NES for Christmas when I was 6, and I kept playing it (fairly consistently) until I was sixteen–when the system finally gave out after 10 years of reliable service. Yes, there were days when a game would freeze up on me just as I made it to the final boss battle..and yes, there were the times that I threw a game cartridge across the room in frustration…and yes, there were days entirely punctuated with my brother’s mantra, “stop talking to me! You’re making me die!” But, even with all of these petty frustrations, I am typing this blog not six feet away from a (somewhat) functional NES, and I can’t help but be happy to have it in my life. Here are the 7 greatest games from my youth, although there were many, many more.

7. RBI Baseball - I get no enjoyment out of playing sports. I couldn’t care less when the Red Sox won the World Series, but RBI baseball was seriously fun, and it had the best replay-value out of any of the games in my library. On my Genesis, it was Mutant League Hockey, and on my NES, it was RBI Baseball.

Short, fat, generic baseball gods.

6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project – Everyone chooses the 2nd in the series because of the famous arcade version, and I have to admit, I spent many-a-quarter on that damn game, but TMNT3 was the one I had in my own personal library, and despite being strikingly similar to the 2nd, this one had cool special moves for every turtle.

5. Battletoads – Even though I rarely made it past the hovercraft level, I loved the sense of power I got from a well-placed punch combo.

4. River City Ransom - This was the closest I ever got to playing an “open world” game on my NES. You could just run around beating the hell out of people and taking their money, then spending it on rice balls and brass knuckles at the local candy shop (don’t ask why candy shops sold rice balls).

3. Super Mario Brothers 3 - Most would argue that this was the best game for the NES, and if it wasn’t so easy, I’d have to agree with them, but the fact of the matter is that most people just got the magic flutes and jumped straight to the end, which is too bad because the levels in the middle were wicked awesome.

2. The Legend of Zelda – This game got me through my childhood and led me down the path of geekdom more completely than any other game in my library. It was (and still is) 100 percent compulsively playable.

1. Mega Man 2 – From the completely dope intro (Mega Man warping off of a windy rooftop w/ seriously cinematic style) to the depths of Dr. Wiley’s castle, Mega Man 2 was an exercise in skill. Mega Man games are famously tight, but this one was downright elegant. Every level of this classic side-scroller was perfectly designed and completely enjoyable. Thank you, Capcom, for ensuring that I’d be awkward around girls for the next ten years (and beyond).

In 1981, Namco unleashed what was to become the most successful arcade cabinet of all time, Ms. Pac-Man, which featured subtle but significant tweaks on the original Pac-Man, thus seriously enhancing the gameplay experience. A few of these changes were as follows: 1) Apparently, the logarithms (not that I remember enough sophomore math to really get this) which were used to program the ghosts made them less predictable and more erratic, 2) instead of remaining static, the fruit dances around the play-field and appears in a random order, 3) and, of course, Ms. Pac-Man features a female protagonist–which was a rare find in the male-centric world of 80s gaming.

Even if you’re a wee-young gamer, you’re probably aware of these facts. You’ve been raised in a world saturated with Pac-mania. Many bars (and Laundromats) here in Brooklyn feature a Ms. Pac-Man machine (even if it is adjacent The Fast and the Furious). What you’re probably not privy to is that Ms. Pac-Man began her long career with a snip and a tuck–namely, a sex change. She was originally a little guy named Crazy Otto (see below).

Who the hell is Crazy Otto? He’s the brainchild of two MIT students, Doug Macrae and Kevin Curran. Macrae and Curran basically hacked one of the original Pac-Man consoles and made a few key alterations, giving him legs and turning the ghosts into Furby-esque monsters. Aside from that, their wizardry had to do with slight alterations to the A.I. (if you could call it that). When they realized that they had somehow created a fantastic game, they promptly sold it to Midway, the North American distributor of Pac-Man, who (in turn) handed it over to the rightful owners, Namco. And that’s all she wrote. Without Crazy Otto, Ms. Pac-Man wouldn’t exist; without two MIT college students, we wouldn’t have something to do with the 30 minutes that our laundry is drying.

I don’t plan on including video game systems, though they are pretty much a given as a big part of my childhood, simply because they’re not really toys. Everything else on this list however, is.

7. X-Men

I’m a little hesitant to even add the X-Men toys to my list; this only started to happen during the last days of my childhood when I picked up more comics and less and less toys, but I still feel it important. I didn’t own a lot of them, but I admit I owned a ton of Wolverines, probably because I had no idea where the hell to go to find my favorites (Gambit and Psylocke), plus I wasn’t allowed to ride public transportation alone yet.

6. G.I. JOE

Every boy had one, and if you didn’t, one of your friends probably left it at your house and forgot about it, thereby making it yours (boyhood law). To really re-enact the show, you had to make him escape from a vehicle just before it exploded, because we all know no one ever died in G.I. JOE.

5. Godzilla

Back in the day I was a certified Godzilla junkie, and I can vividly remember watching the films every Saturday in my parent’s tiny apartment on Park Ave (in the Bronx, that is). Dinosaurs were cool, but the idea of a radioactive one with Atomic Breath (oh god I loved the AB) was just the joint. I also had Rodan, but let’s face it – he was a bitch.

4. Transformers

On certain random days, a few meaningless thoughts will rattle around my head: a crazy dream I had, old girlfriends I dated, random subway images, and the fact that my little brother and I (for an incredibly short time), owned one of the original Optimus Prime toys – the one where his trailer becomes the mobile fortress – and then lost it about a week or two later on a construction site with our dad. I hadn’t done it in a while, but I’ve checked ebay today, and that fucker is worth over $200. Kids are idiots.

3. Hot Wheels

I will admit this: the toy cars that are made these days are admittedly much better than when I was a kid (thank moder automotive aesthetic design for that), but Hot Wheels were undoubtedly a cornerstone of my childhood, and definitely still stay with me in a way. For a person who has never had a driver’s licence, I know more about cars than most people who actually own one. My shame has long faded away into apathy on that last one.

2. Power Wheels

I credit Rufus for reminding me of this expensive ass gimmick – that I totally loved. My brother and I would fight over who got to drive and who rode shotgun, and the worst part was waiting for the battery to charge (when you live on an island where electrical output differs from the U.S. it’s a big deal). I’m pretty sure we hit a cat once, and I’m pretty sure it was ours.

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I can sum up my 80's with this pic.

You name it, my brother and I owned it: Multiple variations of Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello and Michelangelo, the Shredder, the Turtle Van, Turtle Blimp, Bebop & Rocksteady… even April O’neil and Splinter, with his raggedy-ass burgundy kimono and walking stick. Not that I’m proud of it, but we lost more Ninja Turtles than some people ever owned. You can call that perseverance.

Twenty years ago a cinematic masterpiece was unleashed upon the world. No not Opportunity Knocks, it was about lean green fighting machines. Yes Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, was released twenty years ago. The Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters pretty much encompassed most of my childhood cartoon watching and toy playing. As I sit typing this right now the ninja turtles are watching me from the top of my desk. I once had a theory that everything our generation liked came from the Ninja Turtles. It had ninjas, pizza, skateboarding (extreme sports), arcade games, martial arts, Asian philosophy, hockey (via Casey Jones) and hot redheads in jumpsuits. The first movie in the series stands the test of time as actually a good movie. By far the best of the series (come on I know your thinking Secret of the Ooze but that got pretty ridiculous plus the ninja rap was only cool when you were little) the first film actually had a plot and character arcs and was fairly dark. It brought the best of the comic and the cartoon together into one glorious turtle power movie.

I’m hoping that they continue with the Turtles line, as I for one really enjoyed TMNT. Also I would love to see hardcover collections of the Image comic book. Also could we please get the special edition with the deleted scenes and alternate ending over here? Why only Germany?
