Corey Haim: Dead at 38

March 10, 2010 NEWS 1 Comment

Haim: Man, Myth, Legend

We here at Paper Spaceships would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Haim family, 1980′s film fans and most importantly to Corey Feldman. We no longer have The Corey’s on our beautiful green Earth.

He died of an accidental drug overdose in an Oakwood apartment. His mother was in the apartment at the time.

I’ll leave with a quote from Corey Haim, back in the 80′s. How sad a quote it is.

“I think maybe ten years from now, I’m hopefully going to be, in like, Tahiti or something. Kicking back like in my huge mansion, if everything goes right, it’s all up to me.”

Top 7 Tuesday: Webcomics

March 9, 2010 Top 7s No Comments

Another Tuesday means another Top 7 list and this week is no exception. We here at Paper Spaceships love comics. We especially love webcomics, because most of the time it seems that they are a bit more frequent. I always wonder if Kevin Smith will do a webcomic so we can all wait extended periods of time for a continuous series.

Without further adieu, it’s my Top 7 Webcomics. Enjoy!

Top 7 Webcomics

March 9, 2010 Top 7s 2 Comments

It’s about that time. Time for what? Another Top 7 Tuesday that’s what. This is where we (the writers) bring you (the readers) our Top 7 favorite things from no particular category chosen at random by us or by you. Leave your comments to give us some new ideas! Seriously we’d love to hear from you. Anyway this week were covering a topic close to our nerd hearts: webcomics. One of the best things to come out of the internets in the recent years webcomics take up a good portion of my internet reading. Some of them are daily, most are twice a week, some are once a week and yet others are whenever they feel like it. Lots of webcomics spring up and then disappear or just run their course in terms of story telling. So what follows are some of my personal favorites. I’ve purposely kept most of the big ones off the list (ie Penny Arcade) but those ones are good too and you should definitely read them. … Continue Reading

GODZILLA HAIKU

Found via the interesting io9 I discovered my favorite tumblr blog ever. GODZILLA HAIKU. Now for those of you who don’t know I have a rather large soft spot in my heart for the giant green one, and this site launched cupids arrow right into it. So if you like kaiju like I do (see what I did there?) go now. But first a taste of what you’ll get:

Godzilla lets his feelings out.

If you don't understand why this is full of win we can't be friends.

VIDEOGIOCO

Hello intrepid space cowboys. I bring to you in your journeys yet another amazing thing from teh internets. This is a animation by Donato Sansone and it is very impressive. I can’t even begin to fathom how many hours it took to conceive, draw, and animate this work. Kudos to you Mr. Sansone, for bringing me and (hopefully) my loyal readers some entertainment.

The Last Airbender is Racist! So is Hollywood!

March 4, 2010 Films, Musings 7 Comments

Can you tell which one doesn't belong here?

You’ve read that right. I’m sorry to dash your dreams and break your spirits, but the new film based on the other and better Avatar franchise, which because of the Cameron film is called The Last Airbender, is in fact just another poor excuse in Hollywood’s white washing machine and how they tend to showcase the usual stereotypes of good = white and bad = any dark color in the proverbial rainbow of goodness.

What am I talking about? You haven’t seen the trailer yet? Okay, I’ll embed it right below the break and then continue with the discussion.

Abraham Lincoln was a Vampire Hunter?

Hugh Jackman as Lincoln? Um. No!

So says Seth Grahame-Smith who wrote the new book, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which to me sounds pretty awesome already. He also wrote the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, so it seems as if he has a knack for old timey things with cool monsters. A simple idea which has made him tons of money.

But this is even more important now because Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (who had already produced the animated film 9) are on board to produce this new Abraham Lincoln film. Which I find amazing and also sad when it comes to the oft delayed Steven Spielberg Lincoln film he’s been trying to make for over a decade now.

Grahame-Smith will also pen the screenplay. As long as he doesn’t watch Van Helsing we’ll be alright.

Top 7 Sword and Sandal Films

March 2, 2010 Top 7s No Comments

Sword and Sandal Films, or pepla if you want to sound educated, were an Italian sub-genre that lasted between 1957 – 1964 up until the birth of the Spaghetti Western. They usually were gladiatorial or set in Biblical and mythological times and tended to star a professional bodybuilder in the title role, which usually meant the actor was playing Hercules or someone else with shoulders like boulders. Some of the best genre directors in Italy did these films, such as Mario Bava, Antonio Marghereti, Umberto Lenzi and even Sergio Leone did these films and made a ton of money off of them, capitalizing on the trend in Hollywood a decade or so before when historical epics were the rage. But of course they were done in a much cheaper format, making films that didn’t always look the best but profit margins were through the roof.

That’s your history lesson for today, kiddies. But considering this is my list and the first Top 7 Tuesdays at Paper Spaceships after quite a long time, we decided to take any film where the protagonist/antagonist wear sandals of some sort and always have a sword at play.

In no order whatsoever, because I love all these films like my own children, here is my Top 7 Swords and Sandal films. … Continue Reading

TOP 7 Sword and Sandal Flicks

March 2, 2010 Top 7s No Comments

So we here at Paper Spaceships are resurrecting our dormant Top 7 Tuesdays. Where we bring you, our loyal readers, our Top 7 picks from an arbitrary category either picked by us or suggested by you (via comments or e-mail). In honor of several upcoming big budget films this week we decided to do Sword and Sandal films which technically are the Italian entries into the fantasy and action genre set in ancient times and loosely based on mythology or history. They are to Hollywood historical epics, as Spaghetti Westerns are to Hollywood Westerns. However we’re (or at least I’m) expanding that to include any picture with swords and sandals, because I feel like it and this is my list. If you take fault in that let me know in the comments.

Without further ado. Here is my list (in no real order): … Continue Reading
