TOP 7 Sword and Sandal Flicks

So we here at Paper Spaceships are resurrecting our dormant Top 7 Tuesdays. Where we bring you, our loyal readers, our Top 7 picks from an arbitrary category either picked by us or suggested by you (via comments or e-mail). In honor of several upcoming big budget films this week we decided to do Sword and Sandal films which technically are the Italian entries into the fantasy and action genre set in ancient times and loosely based on mythology or history. They are to Hollywood historical epics, as Spaghetti Westerns are to Hollywood Westerns. However we’re (or at least I’m) expanding that to include any picture with swords and sandals, because I feel like it and this is my list. If you take fault in that let me know in the comments.

Top 7 Picture Books

Unlike Rufus, I didn’t grow up with picture books… My family needed every spare scrap of paper to keep winter’s cold fingers from caressing the contours of our two bedroom apt in the Bronx, and I thank Maurice Sendak for all of the 5 seconds his masterpiece kept me warm. If I have to list any of my favorite picture books, you’re going to see some very familiar faces, because they’re all on the front of cereal boxes… do those count?

Ok, so perhaps I fibbed just a little bit there; I never owned Where the Wild Things Are. Growing up in the caribbean, access to a lot of the popular American books was limited, so my reading as a kid was always out of my age range, and I would read them over and over again until I could understand them.
