Mutant Girl Squad Teaser!

The good folks over at Twitch Film (seriously how do they do it) just released the first teaser for the Yoshihiro Nishimura x Noboru Iguchi x  Tak Sakaguchi epic Mutant Girl Squad. Now for those of you who don’t know Nishimura= Tokyo Gore Police, Iguchi= Machine Girl, and Sakaguchi = Samurai School (and various other works with Ryuhei Kitamura). Apparently this new film is an anthology of sorts with each director taking on a third of the narrative. Not that we will watch it for the plot, more the insane gore effects. We here at Paper Spaceships salute you Japan, for giving us the 80s back, crazy grindhouse style.

Again sorry for the weird dimensions but click and enjoy.

Fright Night Remake Has A Director?

Vampirism and Puberty go hand in hand.

The L.A. Times is reporting that Craig Gillespie will likely sit behind the camera and direct the remake of Fright Night. If you’re not too familiar with Gillespie, he’s the same director who made the films Mr. Woodcock and Lars and the Real Girl. Both are horrific films, so it makes sense that he’d make an official horror film now.

Now I’m just wondering if whoever plays “Evil” Ed Thompson will also get into gay pornography after refusing to be in the sequel.

Iron Man 2 Trailer Looks Amazing

There really is no story here. Just bask in the glory of the Iron Man 2 trailer. It’s one of the films I’m most looking forward to this year.

Bask in its glory below.

Repossess My Heart

Bromantics Law and Whitaker

Repo Men is shaping up to be a really exciting film.  Let me just start off by saying that I’m not usually one to buy into the hype surrounding a film before its release; in fact, I’m usually skeptical until well after the opening credits.  The only movie in recent history that I can remember getting really excited about is Watchmen. Before that, it was LOTR (just to get a little perspective).

With that said, the more I hear about Repo Men, the more I just can’t wait to see it.  With actors like Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, it’s impossible not to take this movie seriously.  And the trailers make it look like Guy Ricthie decided to combine Blade Runner and Soylent Green into one helluva film (with what seems like a couple of moments straight out of The Matrix.  Okay, that might be a little much.  In fact, if this film is derivative, it’s derivative of an entirely different movie.

Blood Bond aka Michael Biehn Brings it Back

The good fellows over at Twitch Films (probably one of our favorite film sites on the interwebs) just posted the sales reel for an up coming movie called Blood Bond. And it is all sorts of win. We have Phoenix Chou, Simon Yam and Michael Biehn roughing it up and fighting 80s kungfu style. That is a 80s action movie nerd’s wet dream. Well maybe not but I must say this movie looks awesome. I love Simon Yam and Michael Biehn and the soundtrack is totally metal. The nonsensical plot aside (really who watches these for an enlightening experience anyway) I can’t wait to see this. Synopsis and trailer after the break: … Continue Reading

Abraham Lincoln was a Vampire Hunter?

Hugh Jackman as Lincoln? Um. No!

So says Seth Grahame-Smith who wrote the new book, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which to me sounds pretty awesome already. He also wrote the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, so it seems as if he has a knack for old timey things with cool monsters. A simple idea which has made him tons of money.

But this is even more important now because Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (who had already produced the animated film 9) are on board to produce this new Abraham Lincoln film. Which I find amazing and also sad when it comes to the oft delayed Steven Spielberg Lincoln film he’s been trying to make for over a decade now.

Grahame-Smith will also pen the screenplay. As long as he doesn’t watch Van Helsing we’ll be alright.

The Avatar bandwagon is starting to get crowded

I’ve been trying to motivate myself to add Isaac Asimov (may his brilliant soul rest in peace) and his Foundation books to my to-be-read list, and I see reason to get my ass in gear: Roland Emmerich, the self-appointed disaster movie king wants to do a film version of the series. Not only that, he wants to do it Avatar-style, with CGI all the way.

Talk about biting off more than you can chew. Granted, every book in the series can be considered a stand-alone, its still spans seven books, and 500 years, all in the future. Where exactly does one start with that?

I only have Prelude to Foundation, but maybe I can start my lamentations there. This probably won’t end well. At least, not until I see the first trailer.

From One Toy To the Next: Taylor Lautner

February 28, 2010 Film Previews, NEWS No Comments

Yes, I’m posting a story about Taylor Lautner on Paper Spaceships. Why? Because it’s important news in Hollywood. It truly shows how Hollywood is falling into a black abyss of unspeakable horrors and shoving more and more drivel into the eyes of the movie going public. To be honest, if anyone actually pays to see a movie based on a film based on an old toy that nobody gives two shits about in many decades, then I guess I really don’t know anything about film at all.

Vulture reports that Taylor Lautner has dropped out of the Mattel backed film Max Steel and had moved forward with Hasbro’s film based on Stretch Armstrong.

Yes, we live in a world where some no talent actor, who makes Robert Pattinson seem like Peter O’Toole decides to leave one movie based on a crappy toy and jumps to another movies based on another crappy toy which hasn’t even been relevant in 30 years. Trust me, I do remember the ‘relaunch’ of the Stretch Armstrong line back in the 90′s.

Which would you choose, my loyal readers?

Max Steel

Stretch Armstrong

Personally I’m waiting for my script for the Jenga movie to be optioned.

Resident Evil 4 Was At Least a Good Video Game

February 28, 2010 Film Previews, NEWS 2 Comments

Actually, it was one of the best video games I’ve ever played. But that’s not what this post is about.

Milla Jovovich announced via her Twitter account that the trailer for the new Resident Evil movie will premiere before the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street when it opens on April 30th.

A few thoughts, if you don’t mind. First off, I love Milla Jovovich, even when the films are completely horrendous. Ultraviolet, anyone?

Secondly, do we really need another Resident Evil movie? I still hold it in my head that George A. Romero at one time was attached to do the film and will always compare the fictitious movie that I’ve made up in my head that he made compared to these Paul W.S. Anderson films. Eh, we’ll always have that Biohazard Japanese commercial he did.

Well, like the Resident Evil dork that I am, I will see this film when it comes out. And for all you readers out there, I will leave you with this photo of Milla Jovovich.

Nip slip, anyone?

For the best fantasy shows, stick with cable

February 28, 2010 Film Previews, Musings 4 Comments

"Are we cancelled already? The pilot didn't even air!"

Maybe it’s just me, but the sci/fantasy based TV shows on local television are frankly just dull. Besides Lost (which is in the final throes) and Fringe (which finally decided to get to the point), there is hardly anything to really be excited for if you don’t call your local cable provider.

Flash Forward isn’t terrible, but I’m watching it because really, what else is out there? V is disappointing so far. Dollhouse was rushed off the grand stage, even though it went out on a high note. Smallville should have been canceled, or completely overhauled 3-4 years ago, because it really hurts to watch it now. Tom Welling may actually get to fly – but only because he wants to hurl himself out a window at this point.

Wait, shhhhh… anyone else hear that? I can practically feel James’ astral projection punching me in the side of the head, screaming “SupernaturalSupernatural!” Sorry, I’m still back on Season 2 with most of its original audience… you know, when it was still boring. Deliver on the story earlier, or fall to the wayside. With the ratings so low, it’s a miracle that show hasn’t been canned yet. I do however, hope the creator actually ends the show this year like he says he will, so I can finally start watching it again.

Oh, and if anyone mentions Legend of the Seeker, I will shoot myself in the face. No joke.

Anyways, I’m just hoping that when the fall lineup of pilots for 2010 is announced, it can be more promising that now. With so many shows fizzling, there is usually a window in the spring to catch some disillusioned viewers like myself.

Case in point? I’m curious to see NBC’s Day One, which I shouldn’t count as a series; its a 2-hour movie that has the potential to become a series if NBC deems it has enough viewers. The show’s creator is Jesse Alexander, who was a producer on Lost, Alias and HeroesDay One is about survivors gathering together after an alien attack.
