Superman vs. Captain America! News About Both!

February 24, 2010 Film Previews, NEWS 4 Comments

Now that I’ve gotten your attention, it’s an exciting day for comic book fans. Hollywood has tons of comic book movies being made and to hear that we might finally get a good Captain America movie not starring JD Salinger’s son makes us happy. People are kind of judging it already because it’s being directed by Mr. Joe “I took over The Wolfman 2 weeks before Mark Romanek decided to have a hissy fit” Johnston, and I feel bad that he gets such a bad rap. I kind of enjoyed it and hell, he made the fucking Rocketeer (which is in the right time period). … Continue Reading

Tom Selleck’s Mustache Stars in Runaway

February 20, 2010 Film Reviews No Comments

Recently I was laid up on my couch sick and watching movies. Instead of my usual Law and Order: SVU marathon I decided to browse my recently reactivated Netflix account to see what there was to see.

What I saw nearly blew my mind: Tom Selleck with a laser gun. I flipped past it, and then had to return just to make sure that what I saw was real. Now you have to understand how much I like Tom Selleck. Sure he has never been a huge star but he has been in some good stuff and that mustache is totally manly. Also I had a standing movie night with one of my best friends everytime a Jesse Stone movie came out on DVD. (Do the math there: Robert B. Parker book + Robert Harmon directing + Tom Selleck’s ‘stache= awesome) We had picked the first one up for a laugh during a bad movie night and found that it wasn’t bad at all but actually good and Selleck’s performance was impressive.

Anyway Runaway also has Gene Simmons as the bad guy. I immediately hit play now. … Continue Reading

Planet Hulk Is a Smash… on DVD!

February 3, 2010 Film Reviews No Comments

Yes, sorry for the bad pun. But it is true. I truly enjoyed the hell out of this new Marvel Animation movie. It’s the first one that had me smiling throughout the whole film from beginning to end. I have yet to see Next Avengers, but that can be saved for another article.

If you’re not familiar with the comic book storyline by Greg Pak… well… then go out and buy the damn trade paperback and read it 12 times like I did when it initially came out. Yes, true believers, I read the comics as they came out and then bought the trade paperback as well. Hardcover too. That’s how amazing that story is. When people ask me what it’s like, I tell them it’s Conan in space.

Scott Pilgrim Fights His Way To Theaters!

Scott Pilgrim

In All His Glory

August 13th.

The day that everyone should be marking on their calendars right now.

It’s simple really. Not only is Scott Pilgrim based on a beloved graphic novel series by the fantastic and talented Bryan Lee O’Malley, but it’s also the new film by one of the talented young go getters in Hollywood today, Edgar Wright.

Yes, I just said ‘young go getter’. So sue me. I’m excited about this. Finally, a set date for one of the films we here at Paper Spaceships are looking forward to.

You should be too. Read the graphic novels. If you do buy them, tell them we sent you there. Maybe we’ll get a high five the next time we see them.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, August 13th, be there!

Slow Burn in Utopia

Sometimes, you see a movie, and you despite all of the problems you have with it, you can’t help but like it.  This is how I feel about Visioneers, a debut attempt by Brandon and Jared Drake (two fresh faces who seem to have accomplished something substantial right out of the gates).  This movie has heart and ambition in a serious way, and if it seems amateurish to a lot of viewers, well, that’s only indicative of two young filmmakers with more talent than practical experience.

A Very Dark Road

theroadNot really one for reading a book because the movie’s about to drop, I was so fascinated by the trailer for Cormac McCarthy’s The Road I had to break tradition. That, and the fact that Viggo Mortensen (great actor) and Charlize Theron (hot) are headlining the film. A Pulitzer Prize winner, The Road is simply a tale of a father and son traveling to a hopefully safer and warmer part of a post-apocalyptic America. Simple the plot may be, but what entails in their journey is certainly far from it. There are more than a few horrifying scenes here, and I feel comfortable saying The Road is one of the most bleak novels I have ever read. … Continue Reading

District 9 Promo Trailer

District 9 is something that I have been looking forward to for a while. Neill Blomkamp came onto my nerdar when he released his Halo short films. I quickly checked out his other shorts and was duly impressed. His ability to integrate CG elements into what looked like documentary footage was impressive and marked this young director as someone to watch. I’m glad he has finally gotten the chance at a big production (produced by another of my favorites Peter Jackson).

What follows is not a normal theatrical trailer but a production promo and it should be noted that it does give plot away, so if you want to go into this film cold and without knowledge of the plot do not click play.
